Students, young people and early-career music-industry people!

You will be shown around the venue and be introduced to the artists involved, with opportunities to ask questions in a welcoming space, giving you an introduction to the live music industry and what careers are available on your doorstep and beyond.
This is an incredibly valuable opportunity, open to anyone interested in the music industry and wants to build a relationship with audiences, venue teams and crew. Additionally, you are welcome to stay to enjoy the gig after the session for free.

Out of the Box

Out of the Box - Inspiration, collaboration and celebration for music development

Friday 17 November, 1-4:30pm (at Humber St Social) followed by an evening of collaborative music at Trinity Market from 5pm.

‘Out of the Box’ brings together people from across the entire Hull music sector, appreciating the broad scope of music, taking an ‘Out of the Box’ look at long-term music development in the City. With creativity at the centre, we’re taking a holistic view that recognises the unique inter-related organic music eco-system in Hull. If you’re part of that ecosystem we’d welcome you to take part. Join us to help shape a vision of the future of music in Hull that’s inclusive, co-operative, diverse and strong.

The afternoon summit event at Social on Humber Street will shine a spotlight on inspiring activity in the City, reflect on our own offers and wants, consider the value of collaboration and put music centre stage.

An early evening of networking at Trinity Market will lead into a night of performances of ‘Out of the Box’ special collaborative commissions and news of future ‘Out of the Box’ commission opportunities for local artists with J-Night.

Featuring world premiere performances of exciting new collaborative work by:

• Graziana Presice with Stewart Baxter ‘Intermundia’ (classical piano and electro)

• Josh Overton with Nigel Taylor and Aaron Green ‘The Battle of Blair Mountain’ (hip-hop meets country and western)

• Stephanie Halsey with Nigel Taylor ‘Our Love’ inspired by Maya Angelou & Elizabeth Browning (classical harp meets hip-hop)

• Mambo Jambo with Joe Martin (latin, jazz, folk and classical fusion) part inspired by flamenco rhythms

• Samatar Elmi with Richard Sleight and Freedom Chorus singers. Darker Light: Cadair Idris (spoken word with choral backing - film of a site-specific work filmed on the staircase in Hull’s Maister House.

Followed by a takeover by members of the Hull Youth Music Network.

Book your place to join us on Friday 17 November 2023, for either the afternoon summit or the evening of networking and performances or both.

This is a Council-funded event organised by Arts Development, Hull City Council, connecting with activity of J-Night’s Hull Jazz Festival, Hull Music Service and Hull Youth Music Network with support of Arts Council England.

The views, ideas and information gathered will feed into work conducted as part of a larger development programme, which will shape future Music plans for Hull.

Join us for either the afternoon or evening or both
